A split release, featuring two tracks by the Danish Jazz trio ACE/FERM/HESS, and a long magnetic tape meditation by Missing Channels, a recently unearthed reclusive tape composer.
In this live recording, the trio explores two of the most exquisite of Jazz standards, Gershwin's But Not for Me and Monk's Friday the 13th, Ferm's lines establishing, dissolving and echoing the sounds and harmonies of Coltrane, Rollins, and the outer edges of Sam Rivers. In this three-way conference call, Anders Christensen and Mikkel Hess converse freely, expanding and contracting the structures and surfaces of the compositions, stretching time and timbre to its limits while always retaining the cohesion which emanates naturally from perennial collaboration.
The third track, and the flipside of the cassette, is a 1/4" tape loop constructed by Missing Channels. Now a teenager, the loop emerged recently from a distant drawer, creased and partially disintegrated. These physical artifacts of time add a sense of variation and dynamics which gradually unfold over 24 minutes.
Together these three recordings represent and speak to captured tracts of time, shared experiences, solitary experiences, and rituals and meanings expressed in sound, beyond words.
